We still have a couple of rounds of Club Night left but the rest of the bowling activities came to a conclusion at the weekend. The annual Men v Women match was so well attended on Saturday that all six rinks were put to use with pretty much an equal number of men and women .. something to be applauded. As for the result, the honours were shared with wins on three rinks each .. which means the men remain unbeaten for the last four years! Many thanks to the organisers and helpers, particularly Dennis, our Club Captain, and Nikki.

Here are details of an event organised by the Cricket Club which may be of interest ..

We played the penultimate team game of the season today at Teddington but unfortunately the weather won with the game abandoned after 6 ends. Picking out the positives .. it was good experience playing on mats for the first time for some and Sunbury picked up two of the three raffle prizes!
The green will be put to bed for another season on the weekend of 28-29th Sept. The weather has turned a bit against us this last week and prevented grass cutting so here’s hoping for better in the next three weeks.
The 14 trophies were won by 12 players but, pleasingly, we had two first-time winners. Congratulations to Nathan, winning two trophies, including a very hard-fought Junior Championship; and Sandy who won the Women’s Pairs, alongside Eileen, by one shot after nearly 3hrs play .. the longest match of the weekend. Another game won by a single shot and with a remarkable comeback was in the Mixed 2-woods where BobH was behind after every end until the last one!
Here’s how we arrived at the weekend ..
This week’s team friendlies were cancelled due to the visitors in one case and a washout in the other. Fortunately the SML game with Hampton went ahead on Sunday with plenty of sun on show. The rinks were shared 2-2 but Hampton gained more shots due to some rather loose final ends by the home team and took the match 6-4. This means Hampton look untouchable at the top of the table whilst Sunbury maintain 6th place, just ahead of Bishop Duppas. This should make for an interesting couple of remaining games as both are against Bishop Duppas .. Sunbury have never finished above them in recent history!
Sunbury followed up last year’s success at the Bluewood Cup by retaining the trophy on Saturday. After a series of 7-end games played across Men’s, Women’s & Mixed Pairs as well as two Mixed Triples, Sunbury ended the day on 26pts, with Hampton on 20pts and hosts Fordbridge Park on 14pts. Every team contributed magnificently with at least 2 wins, with last year’s top team of Karen & Eileen winning all their four games .. yet again! Thanks to all the supporters and reserve players and the hosts for a superb day.
Friday Triples concludes this week and then Sunbury defends the Bluewood Cup on Saturday at Fordbridge Park, no doubt against a very hungry Hampton team.
Congratulations to Anita on becoming Middlesex Women’s Unbadged Singles champion. Her final was played at Cambridge Park on Saturday and unlike in her previous rounds it didn’t go down to the wire, winning 21-16. It caps off a great week for Anita fresh on the heels of her son’s wedding.
