An unsettled week

The weather has certainly been the winner over the last week or so with cancellations in the internal leagues, roll-ups and last weekend’s Presidents Cup. We did manage to plough through the rain on Monday’s Evening league though.

This Saturday, 10th, we have the Open 2-Wood Singles one-day knockout. It starts at 10am and the current weather forecast seems to indicate that we should at least get through the last-16 matches. The draw is available on the website. I’ve been asking around for markers but am still a little short so anyone who could spare 90mins from 10am would be a hero! Open 2-Wood Singles – 10th July

Also on Saturday, 10th, we have the current Mens Champion, Dennis, continuing his run in the Middlesex Mens Unbadged Singles, playing quarter/semi-finals at North London Bowling Club.

Ann & Eileen won their 3rd round Middlesex Ladies over-55 Pairs at home but lost in the 4th round in a competitive match at Bishop Duppas on Wednesday.

Competitions 2021

The draws for this season’s internal competitions have been made with the exception of the Junior championship. We haven’t set any dates for the rounds to be completed (yet) but please don’t delay and arrange your matches today! We also want to setup some specific dates for the later rounds to be played and enjoyed by all.

Mens 2021

Womens 2021

Open/Mixed 2021

Singles – first player to 21 shots

Two-wood Singles – played over 21 ends or when a player is too far ahead to be caught

Pairs – 3 bowls each played over 18 ends or when a team is too far ahead to be caught

Handicap – played to 21 shots adjusted by the difference in handicaps, Eg. player A has a handicap of 4 and player B has 3 means that player A requires 22 shots to win and player B requires 21 shots.

The sheets are displayed on the noticeboards just inside the bowls entrance to the main clubhouse.

This Sunday, 4th July, sees the next of our day-long competitions – the Presidents Cup. It starts at 10am and some of those not playing in the first set of matches are asked to help mark a game.

Presidents Cup – 4July

_____________________________________

We had a mixed bag of results this week. David & Cassie lost their 4th round Middlesex Mixed Pairs match at Ashford but then later in the day exacted some revenge as part of a victorious team match back at Ashford.

Still at Ashford, the Mens Fours of Dennis, Bob, Mark and AlanP went down to an enthusiastic team of youngsters in their Middlesex Fours 5th round match. The Women’s Fours of Anita, Ann, Cassie & Eileen also went down to a talented Cambridge Park team. Despite defeats some enjoyment was had.

Dennis served up the best result of the week with a win at Strawberry Hill in the Middlesex Unbadged Singles 6th round. He next goes to north London to play quarter & semi-finals on 10th July.

Lastly, we had a mid-week near miss against Staines, losing by 4 shots overall in the South Middlesex league. Here’s our current position ..

A warm welcome to Two Woods

The groundskeepers and helpers did a superb job in preparing the green and facilities for the qualifying rounds of the Middlesex Mens Two Woods competition hosted at Sunbury on Saturday 26th. The grass was double cut, the edges trimmed and the catering facilities sorted with Surplus to Supper and Sports Association. The day went well with two county players from Ashford battling out a close fought final 15-14 after 21 ends. Earlier, AlanP progressed through to the quarter-finals before losing to the eventual runner-up.

Seeing out June

Rain won again this last week forcing postponements to both the Friday and Monday leagues .. in between we held the Presidents Plate with, thankfully, just light showers. Let’s hope the start of Wimbledon brings back the sunny weather!?

A day of bowls

Father’s Day was celebrated with a day of bowls in the Presidents Plate on Sunday 20th June. Slight drizzle at the start and then after lunch only whetted the appetite for a competitive set of 5 rounds of games of 7 ends each. One team managed to win all their games followed by another that won 3. Both qualify for the Finals weekend on 4-5th Sept.

AlanP + Cassie + Liam   10 pts

DavidC + John + Karen    6 pts

The heatwave ends

The recent hot weather came to an end during the week, culminating in a postponement to the Friday Triples this week. Bindley and AlanP’s run in the Middlesex Unbadged Singles competitions came to an end but there was a better result for Dennis who progressed into the 6th round, to be played on 30th June. We lost at Bishop Duppas (losing 3 rinks to 1) on Thursday evening – although wet it could have been so much worse. The Fours team of DaivdC, Brian, Lynda & Mark lost in the NW Surrey league at West End, also in the rain.

Please sign-up for matches and competitions – the sheets are in the club house on the noticeboards in the corridor. The deadline for entry to competitions is 21st June.

It’s Sunbury vs Sunbury on 10th June!

A few of our members are taking part in Middlesex competitions this season trying to emulate Anita & Glenda’s success in the Women’s Two Wood Pairs two years ago, and others from further back!

Thursday 10th June will see some of their matches and everyone is welcome to lend support – all matches are at home at various times during the day/evening.

Karen vs Bindley – Karen won through to the 4th round of the Women’s Unbadged Singles beating two players from Bishop Duppas in previous rounds. Bindley is representing Sunbury for the first time and beat a player from Ashford to make it a Sunbury vs Sunbury affair to see who progresses into the quarter-finals.

Lynda & Brian compete in the Mixed Pairs against a pairing from Bishop Duppas from 11am.

Dennis, Bob and AlanP all open their campaigns in the Mens Unbadged Singles.

Also, good luck to Anita, Ann, Bindley, Cassie, Eileen, Karen and Lynda who compete in the Middlesex Two Wood Singles at Ashford on Sunday 6th June from 9:30am .

Bank holiday winners

We enjoyed a super bank holiday of bowls with some really good matches in the resumption of the Two Wood Mixed Pairs. Eileen & Bindley were involved in the two closest matches – winning one and losing one by a single point.

Congratulations to Alex & Tom and Karen & Lynda who won through to make it a Men vs Women affair in September’s final.
