2-wood wizzes!

Our first day-long club competition, the Mixed 2-wood Singles, thankfully coincided with less intense heat on Sunday. After a competitive day of 2-woods (everyone’s favourite I’m sure!) we have our first two finalists for the club finals weekend in September. Congratulations to Martin (a new member but not new to bowls!) and Karen, both were unbeaten in all their games and certainly justify their places. Commiserations to those who came so close and to those who didn’t but nevertheless made it a splendid day of bowls. A special thanks to Wade who takes some beating in arriving first at the club and setting everything up; Nikki for sorting out refreshments and birthday captain Dennis celebrating a special week! Our next all-day club competition is the Presidents Plate on Sat 18th July, played in triples. Further details and the playlist will be published over the coming weeks.

Our women bowlers are setting the pace in county competitions. On Saturday, in the heady heat of Hayes, Karen & Eileen won through 3 rounds of the Middlesex Women’s 2-wood Pairs, and will play a semi-final on 18th July at Ashford.

Karen & Eileen have also qualified for the quarters/semis of the Middlesex Women’s over-55 Pairs at Bounds Green on 4th July, albeit in easier style via a bye and a walkover! Having battled through many rounds in previous years, fingers crossed this is perhaps their lucky year!

Commiserations to Tracy & JenB in their visit to Rosewood, Hayes, for the Middlesex Women’s Pairs quarters/semis day on Sunday. They came very close to winning their county quarter-final, losing by one shot on the final end .. agh!!

Also to Sandy, Anita, Karen & jenC in putting up a valiant fight in the Middlesex o-55 Fours at Cambridge Park on Friday evening.

Good luck to all those featuring in county competitions this week, including Keith who plays Middx Singles on Monday evening as do Karen, Nikki & Eileen in their next round of the Middx Women’s Triples. Both games are at home, alongside some club competition games.

Last Friday’s heat put paid to the Friday Triples league – the cancelled games will hopefully be added to the end of the season. Here are the standings after 3 rounds of play ..

6 pts – Eileen; Simon;

2 pts – Colin; Diane; Nikki;

0 pts – Alison

The rink booking facility Book a Rink has received a change to allow you to book upto 28 days in advance, up from the previous limit of two weeks.

Unfortunately, this year’s annual Men v Women contest followed by family bbq coincides with the SSA’s Gin festival on 12th Sept so a new date will be set; current thinking is Sun 20th Sept.

Sunbury Village Wi will be visiting the club on Monday 20th July from 6:30pm. We are expecting around 35-40 so any help on the green (and afterwards in the bar) would be appreciated. We would particularly request the loan of your bowls to supplement the ones we already have in the chalet. If you are able to lend a hand, just let someone on the committee know.

Our very own raconteur and producer, Geoff, has been hard at work compiling the history of Sunbury for a latest production .. more details coming soon. In the meantime you can hear a little more about our most famous bowler Mavis Steele here .. History of Sunbury Bowls

Barry continues to do a fine job as Treasurer but we do need the books to be audited or verified each year in time for the AGM. Unfortunately we have lost our regular examiner so please do get in touch if you can help, or know anyone who could help (for free, if possible!).
