Competitions in full flow

There has been a flurry of matches played in the internal competitions this week – all the results have been updated and are available here on the website. Please contact me for any ones I’ve missed and further ones.

Mens 2021

Womens 2021

Junior Championship 2021

Open Handicap 2021

The midweek matches went off well – one in hot sunshine, the other in the cold and rain – such is the British weather! We enjoyed a narrow win at Walton and a moderate loss at Hounslow Cons. Sunday’s match against Addlestone has been cancelled due to lack of availability of the away team.

Unfortunately all our competitors are out of the Middlesex singles competitions after Ann and Nikki both lost in away matches. There is good encouragement for next season though with some great individual results.

Fri 6th 11am – Friday Triples .. the last of the season!

Sat 7th 10am – Presidents Cup – 7Aug .. rearranged from July .. I refuse to look at the weather forecast!

Mon 8th 6pm – Monday Evening league ..  the penultimate one?!

Tue 9th 6pm – Club Night Roll-up

Wed 11th 6pm – Roger, AlanP, Brian & Dennis compete at home in the Bunny Haynes trophy

Goodbye July

Both friendly team matches planned for the weekend were cancelled by the opposing teams. With the weather set fair and the greens clear it’s a good time for internal competition bowls – don’t worry who’s named first, please get in touch with your opponent and setup a date!

This is a final call for the Presidents Cup on Sat 7th August. We currently have 14 entries so if you fancy playing please get in touch. It’s a knock-out with each game played to 75 points and 4-3-2-1 scoring on each end. The finalists will play on 4-5th September.

Congratulations to Nikki for winning her 4th round over-55 singles match this week. She and Ann are the last surviving Sunbury players in this season’s Middlesex competitions! Ann plays at Cambridge Park at 5:30pm tonight in her Women’s Champion of Champions match.

The greenkeepers continue their good work – rink 6, adjacent to the car park, has now been treated for dollar spot disease and is out of action for a few days.

Mon 2nd 6pm – Monday Evening league

Tue 3rd 6pm – Club Night Roll-up

Wed 4th 2:30pm – Walton v Sunbury friendly

Thur 5th 2pm – Nikki plays at Bishop Duppas in Middlesex Women’s over-55 5th round

Goodbye to the heatwave

We said goodbye to a stifling hot week with a couple of team matches over the cooler weekend. Both were threatened with rain but in the end only Sunday’s match was impacted. We lost both but picked up valuable points in the South Middlesex League.

The internal Competitions pages on the website have been updated with results to date. Please let me know of any issues or if you need any help arranging matches or with markers. Bear in mind that all semi-finals need to be completed by the end of August in time for the finals weekend on 4-5Sep.

The Presidents Cup is the last of our day-long competitions. It’s scheduled for Sat 7th August from 10am so please sign-up or let me know, by whatever means, if you want to enter.

The week ahead ..

Thur 29th 4:30pm – Nikki plays at Cambridge Park in the Middlesex Women’s o-55 Singles 4th round

Fri 30th 11am – Friday Triples league

Sat 31st 2:30pm – Sunbury v Hayes in South Middlesex League

Sun 1st Aug 2:30pm – Sunbury v Weybridge

A good end to the week

Despite not having any Sunbury winners in this week’s Middlesex games we finished the week on a high with a good 8-2 win against Hounslow Cons in the South Middlesex league on Saturday 17th. There were some very close scores on most rinks but you could say we deserved it after some narrow losses in previous matches.

The Junior Championship has now been drawn. As with all the competitions you need to play all rounds, including semi-finals, before the end of August. Please record results on the boards in the clubhouse or contact Alan Pilkington. See the draw in Competitions from the Main menu or follow this link  Junior Championship 2021

The greenkeepers have been working hard on the dollar spot disease affecting parts of the green, consequently you may find one rink blocked off over the coming weeks.

Be aware, although you may already know, that there is a 2-week closure on Thames Street between French Street and The Avenue following an issue with the sewers.

The week ahead ..

Mon 19th 6pm – Monday Evening league

Tue 20th 11am – Karen plays at Cambridge Park in the Middlesex Women’s 0-55 Singles 4th round

Tue 20th 6pm – Club Night roll-up .. everyone is welcome

Thur 22nd 6am – NW Surrey Mixed Fours at home against West End .. the last one of the season!

Fri 23rd 11am – Friday Triples league

Sat 24th 2:30pm – Sunbury v Staines in South Middlesex league

Sun 25th 2:30pm – Fordbridge Park v Sunbury in South Middlesex league

The week ahead

This week we have a few more entrants competing in the Middlesex competitions. Both Ann and Lynda qualified for the Women’s Champion of Champions this year by virtue of being Sunbury’s Women’s champions last year and 2019, respectively. The competition wasn’t held last year so both qualified. Although Ann gets a bye into the quarter-finals at the end of July after her 4th round opponent broke her wrist!

The Monday Evening league will now run until 16th August in order to catch up with postponed games. Similarly, the Friday Triples league will be extended to 30th July.

Here’s what’s in the diary for the coming week ..

Wed 14th 6pm – Nikki & Dennis play at home in the Middlesex Mixed Pairs 4th round

Thur 15th 6pm – Nikki, Karen, Tom & Dennis play at home in NW Surrey Mixed Fours 3rd round competition

Sat 17th 2:30pm – Sunbury v Hounslow Cons in South Middlesex League

Sun 18th 2:30pm – Ember v Sunbury (friendly I think?!)

Mon 19th 6pm – Monday Evening league

Tues 20th 6pm – Club Night Roll-up

Update .. Tues 13July

Following a narrow loss to Staines in our previous game in the South Middlesex league we had another on Sunday, losing by 5 shots to Bishop Duppas (64-59). It just goes to show that every shot really does count even if you’re on a losing rink.

The Mens good run in the Middlesex competitions is coming to an end – Dennis lost his quarter-final match in the Mens Unbadged Singles at North London on Saturday and AlanP had to forfeit his Mens Singles 3rd round match on Monday.

The rain won yet again on Monday’s Evening league – it will now run until 16th Aug in order to catch up with postponed games. Similarly, the Friday Triples league will be extended to 30th July.

In our internal competitions, the new date for the rearranged  Presidents Cup (day-long knock-out played to 75pts) is Sat 7th August. The deadline for entries is end of July so please contact Alan Pilkington via email/txt/whatsapp/tel/face-to-face if you want to enter. There will also be a sign-up sheet. We have 20 entries from the original date, hopefully you know who you are, so please confirm if you can make the new date.

The Junior Championship will be drawn very soon – we have 12 entries thus far and anyone who hasn’t tasted success in singles competitions is invited to enter. As with all competitions, you must be available to play on 4-5Sep if you were to get to the final.

For those new to the internal competitions, please check the draw on the website or on the sheets in the clubhouse and make contact with your opponent to arrange a date/time to play. If it’s a singles game then you will then need a marker to help centre the jack/mat, measure where necessary and keep the score. Don’t worry if it’s your first time doing this – marking is generally less stressful than playing! It’s generally a good idea to ask for a marker in the same draw then you can reciprocate. The green is available at most times although it may be best to avoid Monday/Wednesday/Friday mornings upto 11am when the grass is generally cut. If you have any queries or issues sorting a marker, checking green availability, etc. then please contact Alan Pilkington.

A completed competition!

After last weekend’s aborted Presidents Cup, we were very lucky with the weather for the Mixed 2-wood Singles on Saturday, 10th July. Although it started raining just before the matches started it never poured down. The day was played in a good spirit and with a few folk new to marking .. thanks to all! The quarter-finals in particular saw some really close games – in the end, Bob Harvey and Alan Pilkington progressed to the final to be played 4-5Sep.

An unsettled week

The weather has certainly been the winner over the last week or so with cancellations in the internal leagues, roll-ups and last weekend’s Presidents Cup. We did manage to plough through the rain on Monday’s Evening league though.

This Saturday, 10th, we have the Open 2-Wood Singles one-day knockout. It starts at 10am and the current weather forecast seems to indicate that we should at least get through the last-16 matches. The draw is available on the website. I’ve been asking around for markers but am still a little short so anyone who could spare 90mins from 10am would be a hero! Open 2-Wood Singles – 10th July

Also on Saturday, 10th, we have the current Mens Champion, Dennis, continuing his run in the Middlesex Mens Unbadged Singles, playing quarter/semi-finals at North London Bowling Club.

Ann & Eileen won their 3rd round Middlesex Ladies over-55 Pairs at home but lost in the 4th round in a competitive match at Bishop Duppas on Wednesday.

Thur 8th 6pm – NW Surrey Fours at Knaphill

Fri 9th 11am – Friday Triples league

Sat 10th 10am – Open 2-Wood Singles knockout competition

Sat 10th 10am – Dennis plays in quarter/semi finals of Middlesex Mens Unbadged Singles at N. London

Sun 11th 2:30pm – Sunbury v Bishop Duppas in South Middlesex league

Mon 12th 6pm – Monday Evening league

Mon 12th 6pm – AlanP plays in the 3rd round Middlesex Mens Singles at home

Tues 13th 6pm – Club Night roll-up

Wed 14th 6pm – Nikki & Dennis play 4th round Middlesex Mixed Pairs at home

Thur 15th 6pm – Nikki, Karen, AlanP & Dennis play in NW Surrey Mixed Fours at home

NB: please do arrange your competition matches for the next two weeks .. the sun will be shining!

Competitions 2021

The draws for this season’s internal competitions have been made with the exception of the Junior championship. We haven’t set any dates for the rounds to be completed (yet) but please don’t delay and arrange your matches today! We also want to setup some specific dates for the later rounds to be played and enjoyed by all.

Mens 2021

Womens 2021

Open/Mixed 2021

Singles – first player to 21 shots

Two-wood Singles – played over 21 ends or when a player is too far ahead to be caught

Pairs – 3 bowls each played over 18 ends or when a team is too far ahead to be caught

Handicap – played to 21 shots adjusted by the difference in handicaps, Eg. player A has a handicap of 4 and player B has 3 means that player A requires 22 shots to win and player B requires 21 shots.

This Sunday, 4th July, sees the next of our day-long competitions – the Presidents Cup. It starts at 10am and some of those not playing in the first set of matches are asked to help mark a game.

Presidents Cup – 4July

_____________________________________

We had a mixed bag of results this week. David & Cassie lost their 4th round Middlesex Mixed Pairs match at Ashford but then later in the day exacted some revenge as part of a victorious team match back at Ashford.

Still at Ashford, the Mens Fours of Dennis, Bob, Mark and AlanP went down to an enthusiastic team of youngsters in their Middlesex Fours 5th round match. The Women’s Fours of Anita, Ann, Cassie & Eileen also went down to a talented Cambridge Park team. Despite defeats some enjoyment was had.

Dennis served up the best result of the week with a win at Strawberry Hill in the Middlesex Unbadged Singles 6th round. He next goes to north London to play quarter & semi-finals on 10th July.

Lastly, we had a mid-week near miss against Staines, losing by 4 shots overall in the South Middlesex league. Here’s our current position ..

A warm welcome to Two Woods

The groundskeepers and helpers did a superb job in preparing the green and facilities for the qualifying rounds of the Middlesex Mens Two Woods competition hosted at Sunbury on Saturday 26th. The grass was double cut, the edges trimmed and the catering facilities sorted with Surplus to Supper and Sports Association. The day went well with two county players from Ashford battling out a close fought final 15-14 after 21 ends. Earlier, AlanP progressed through to the quarter-finals before losing to the eventual runner-up.
