A good end to the week

Despite not having any Sunbury winners in this week’s Middlesex games we finished the week on a high with a good 8-2 win against Hounslow Cons in the South Middlesex league on Saturday 17th. There were some very close scores on most rinks but you could say we deserved it after some narrow losses in previous matches.

The Junior Championship has now been drawn. As with all the competitions you need to play all rounds, including semi-finals, before the end of August. Please record results on the boards in the clubhouse or contact Alan Pilkington. See the draw in Competitions from the Main menu or follow this link  Junior Championship 2021

The greenkeepers have been working hard on the dollar spot disease affecting parts of the green, consequently you may find one rink blocked off over the coming weeks.

Be aware, although you may already know, that there is a 2-week closure on Thames Street between French Street and The Avenue following an issue with the sewers.

The week ahead ..

Mon 19th 6pm – Monday Evening league

Tue 20th 11am – Karen plays at Cambridge Park in the Middlesex Women’s 0-55 Singles 4th round

Tue 20th 6pm – Club Night roll-up .. everyone is welcome

Thur 22nd 6am – NW Surrey Mixed Fours at home against West End .. the last one of the season!

Fri 23rd 11am – Friday Triples league

Sat 24th 2:30pm – Sunbury v Staines in South Middlesex league

Sun 25th 2:30pm – Fordbridge Park v Sunbury in South Middlesex league

Update .. Tues 13July

Following a narrow loss to Staines in our previous game in the South Middlesex league we had another on Sunday, losing by 5 shots to Bishop Duppas (64-59). It just goes to show that every shot really does count even if you’re on a losing rink.

The Mens good run in the Middlesex competitions is coming to an end – Dennis lost his quarter-final match in the Mens Unbadged Singles at North London on Saturday and AlanP had to forfeit his Mens Singles 3rd round match on Monday.

The rain won yet again on Monday’s Evening league – it will now run until 16th Aug in order to catch up with postponed games. Similarly, the Friday Triples league will be extended to 30th July.

In our internal competitions, the new date for the rearranged  Presidents Cup (day-long knock-out played to 75pts) is Sat 7th August. The deadline for entries is end of July so please contact Alan Pilkington via email/txt/whatsapp/tel/face-to-face if you want to enter. There will also be a sign-up sheet. We have 20 entries from the original date, hopefully you know who you are, so please confirm if you can make the new date.

The Junior Championship will be drawn very soon – we have 12 entries thus far and anyone who hasn’t tasted success in singles competitions is invited to enter. As with all competitions, you must be available to play on 4-5Sep if you were to get to the final.

For those new to the internal competitions, please check the draw on the website or on the sheets in the clubhouse and make contact with your opponent to arrange a date/time to play. If it’s a singles game then you will then need a marker to help centre the jack/mat, measure where necessary and keep the score. Don’t worry if it’s your first time doing this – marking is generally less stressful than playing! It’s generally a good idea to ask for a marker in the same draw then you can reciprocate. The green is available at most times although it may be best to avoid Monday/Wednesday/Friday mornings upto 11am when the grass is generally cut. If you have any queries or issues sorting a marker, checking green availability, etc. then please contact Alan Pilkington.

A sweltering weekend

Lots of bowls were rolled over the hot weekend.

We played team matches on both Saturday and Sunday, losing at a fast-running Cambridge Park and winning back on relatively slower home turf against Strawberry Hill.

Unfortunately Ann lost in the quarter-finals of the Middlesex Women’s Two Woods at Hayes. Bob & Anita also lost their 3rd round match in the Middlesex Mixed Pairs on the last end at Hurlingham.

The week ahead ..

Mon 14th 2pm – Bindley plays at home in the quarter-finals of the Middlesex Women’s Unbadged Singles against a player from Staines

Mon 14th 6pm – DavidC, Brian & Richard play at Ashford in the 4th round of the Middlesex Mens Triples

Mon 14th 6pm – Monday Evening league

Tues 15th 6pm – Tuesday Night Roll-up

Wed 16th 6pm – AlanP and Dennis both play at home in 5th round matches in the Middlesex Mens Unbadged Singles against opponents from Strawberry Hill and Ashford, respectively

Thurs 17th 6pm – Bishop Duppas v Sunbury

Fri 18th 11am – Friday Triples league

Sat 19th 10:30 – DavidC (and any helpers) continues coaching of new members

Sat 19th 2:30pm – Sunbury v Fordbridge Park

Sun 20th 10am – Presidents Plate

What a week!

The sun shone this week and so did Sunbury!

We followed up a friendly win at Esher on Sat 5th with a good win at home to Stanwell on Wed 9th. Having lost to them at the start of the season in the cold and rain it was nice to bask in the sun and a win!

In the Middlesex competitions, Ann’s success on Sunday 6th led the way for some others ..

Karen and Bindley had an epic battle in the 4th round of the Women’s Unbadged Singles, with Bindley coming from behind to win 21-20. Bindley plays in the 5th round on Mon 14th at home.

In the 4th round of the Mens Unbadged Singles there were wins for AlanP and Dennis and a defiant loss for Bob. Having been 0-10 down after 5 ends he came back gallantly to get 15 points on the board by the close. All their opponents were from Ashford Bowls Club. AlanP and Dennis are due to play in the next round at home on Wed 16th.

Brian & Lynda went down to a strong pair from Bishop Duppas in the 3rd round of the Mixed Pairs.

We had better success against Bishop Duppas in the Thursday NW Surrey Mixed Fours league beating a strong four by 2 shots. Well done John, Jim, DaveC & EileenL.

Next up are team matches against Cambridge Park away on Sat 12th and at home to Strawberry Hill on Sun 13th. The Monday Evening and Friday Morning leagues have survived the worst of the weather and we should get updates on positions soon. Tuesday roll-ups continue to pick up pace.

One final plea – the deadline for internal competitions draws close so please get your entries in asap.

Congratulations Ann!

Apologies, I omitted Ann from the original list of players competing at the Women’s Two Wood Singles qualifying rounds at Ashford on Sunday 6th! Well, it certainly spurred her on as she qualified in style for the quarter/semis by winning both her games. Good luck on Sat 12th at Hayes.

The green was expertly cut today by DavidC & Brian and will be cut again on Wednesday by Dennis & AlanP. It’ll probably get another cut on Friday .. the week is looking very busy!
